Overview

The Roger™ Pass-around microphone is designed to help a student hear comments, questions and answers from other people in the room more clearly.

It is commonly used in classrooms, group discussions and other learning environments where multiple people may speak throughout the session.

The microphone can be:

  • passed from one speaker to another

  • used by a student answering a question

  • placed in its stand for table or desk use during longer speaking activities

This guide provides simple day-to-day instructions for teachers, staff and students.



What the Roger Pass-around is for

The Roger Pass-around microphone helps by picking up the voice of the person speaking and sending that sound through the Roger system to the listener.

It is especially useful when:

  • other students are asking or answering questions

  • group discussion is taking place

  • the listener is seated away from the speaker

  • classroom noise or distance makes speech harder to hear

Before you start

Before using the Roger Pass-around microphone, check that:

  • the microphone is charged

  • the main Roger classroom microphone/system is switched on

  • the Roger Pass-around has already been connected to the classroom Roger network

  • the student’s hearing technology is ready for use

If the microphone has already been set up by your audiologist, teacher of the deaf, support team or hearing support provider, daily use is usually very simple.

Quick Start

1. Switch it on

Press and hold the On/Off button until the microphone turns on.

2. Check it is ready

Make sure the Roger classroom system is also turned on.

3. Hand it to the speaker

The person speaking should hold the microphone close to their mouth, ideally around 5–10 cm away.

4. Speak clearly

Speak in a normal voice.

5. Pass it on

When finished, pass the microphone to the next person speaking.

Everyday use

Passing microphone use

When the microphone is being passed around:

  • hand it to the person who is about to speak

  • ask them to hold it close to their mouth

  • encourage one person to speak at a time

  • pass it to the next speaker once finished

This helps the listener hear each speaker more clearly.

Table stand use

The Roger Pass-around can also be placed in its stand.

This is helpful when:

  • a student is reading aloud

  • one person will be speaking for a longer time

  • the microphone needs to remain in one place on a desk or table

When using the stand:

  • place the microphone securely in the stand

  • position it in front of the speaker

  • ask the speaker to talk towards the microphone

Good listening tips

For best results:

  • hold the microphone close to the mouth

  • speak in a clear, natural voice

  • do not cover the microphone openings

  • avoid tapping or handling it roughly

  • keep background noise as low as possible where practical

  • encourage only one speaker at a time

Charging

To charge the Roger Pass-around microphone:

  • connect it to its charger, or

  • place it in the compatible charging dock/rack if provided

For best daily use:

  • charge it at the end of each day

  • make sure it is ready before the next lesson or session

If the microphone does not turn on, it may simply need charging.

Connecting to the Roger system

The Roger Pass-around microphone must be connected to the Roger network before use.

This is usually done during setup by:

  • an audiologist

  • a teacher of the deaf

  • support staff

  • another trained person

If the microphone stops working with the classroom system, it may need to be reconnected.

If you are unsure how to do this, contact the person responsible for the Roger setup at your school or service.

Indicator light

The microphone light helps show what the device is doing.

In general:

  • a light may indicate the microphone is on

  • a light may indicate it is transmitting speech

  • a different light colour may indicate mute, priority, or connection status

If you are using multiple Roger microphones in one room, your support provider may explain the light behaviour specific to your setup.

Troubleshooting

The listener cannot hear the speaker

Check that:

  • the Roger Pass-around is switched on

  • the main Roger microphone/system is on

  • the speaker is holding the microphone close enough

  • the hearing device and Roger receivers are being worn correctly

  • the microphone has been connected to the Roger network

  • the microphone has enough charge

The microphone will not turn on

Try:

  • charging the microphone

  • checking the charger connection

  • trying again after a short charging period

The sound is unclear

Check that:

  • the speaker is holding the microphone correctly

  • the microphone is not too far from the mouth

  • there is not excessive background noise

  • the microphone openings are not covered

The microphone seems connected but still does not work

It may need:

  • reconnection to the Roger system

  • checking by the support team

  • review by your audiologist or service provider

Care and handling

To help protect the Roger Pass-around microphone:

  • store it safely when not in use

  • keep it dry

  • avoid dropping it

  • avoid placing heavy items on it

  • return it to its charging location after use

End of day checklist

  •  Switch off the microphone

  •  Check it is not damaged

  •  Place it on charge

  •  Store it in its usual location

  •  Make sure it is ready for the next session

Quick Reference

Use the Roger Pass-around like this:

  1. Switch on

  2. Hand to the speaker

  3. Hold close to the mouth

  4. Speak clearly

  5. Pass to the next speaker

  6. Charge after use
