Roger™ Pass-around Microphone

Simple Classroom User Guide

The Roger™ Pass-around microphone helps students with hearing loss hear comments, questions and answers from other students more clearly.

It works together with the classroom's Roger system and can either be passed between students or placed in its table stand during longer discussions or reading activities.

1. Getting to Know the Roger Pass-around

The microphone includes:

  • On/Off button

  • Two built-in microphones

  • Indicator light

  • Mute / Push-to-Talk button

  • Volume + / – buttons

  • Micro-USB charging connection

  • Anti-roll section

  • Table stand



2. Before the Lesson

Check the microphone is charged

Connect the Roger Pass-around using its Micro-USB charger or place it in a compatible Roger Charging Rack.

A full charge takes approximately 2 hours and provides approximately 10 hours of operating time.

For best results, charge the microphone at the end of each school day.

3. Switching the Microphone On

Press and hold the On/Off button for more than 3 seconds.

The indicator light will show that the microphone has switched on.

4. Connecting to the Classroom Roger System

The Roger Pass-around needs to be connected to the classroom's Roger Touchscreen Mic before it can be used.

To connect:

  1. Switch on the Roger Touchscreen Mic.

  2. Switch on the Roger Pass-around.

  3. Hold the Roger Pass-around within 10 cm of the Roger Touchscreen Mic.

  4. On the Roger Touchscreen Mic, tap Connect.

  5. Confirm that the connection has been successful.

Once connected, the Roger Pass-around becomes part of the classroom Roger network.

Normally this connection does not need to be repeated every day.

5. Using the Microphone

Normal Classroom Use

The normal/default operating mode is Voice Activity Detection — VAD.

In this mode, students do not need to press a button before speaking. The microphone automatically detects speech.

When it is your turn to speak:

  1. Hold the Roger Pass-around approximately 5–10 cm from your mouth.

  2. Speak normally.

  3. A green indicator light shows that your voice is being transmitted.

  4. When you finish speaking, pass the microphone to the next student.

The indicator light will go out when the microphone is no longer transmitting speech.

Remember

Hold it close. Speak normally. Pass it on.

6. Using the Table Stand

For longer answers, presentations or reading aloud, place the Roger Pass-around into its table stand.

The microphone automatically detects its position and changes its microphone configuration to optimise voice pickup.

When using the table stand:

  • Place the microphone in front of the student.

  • Speak towards the microphone.

  • For reading activities, approximately 30–40 cm between the student and microphone is recommended.

This allows the student to use both hands to hold a book, worksheet or other material.

7. Push-to-Talk Mode

The Roger Pass-around can also be configured for Push-to-Talk — PTT.

PTT is not enabled by default. It must first be activated through the Roger Touchscreen Mic.

If your classroom has been configured to use PTT:

  1. Hold the microphone approximately 5–10 cm from your mouth.

  2. Press and hold the microphone button.

  3. Speak normally.

  4. The indicator light will turn green while your voice is being transmitted.

  5. Release the button when you have finished speaking.

If your school has not specifically been instructed to use Push-to-Talk, simply use the microphone in its normal automatic mode.

8. Indicator Light

The indicator light provides useful information about the microphone.

Green
Your voice is being transmitted.

Orange
Another Roger Pass-around has priority and is currently transmitting when Push-to-Talk is being used.

Red
The microphone may be muted.

Blue
The primary Roger microphone may not be available or may be out of range.

9. Good Classroom Practice

For the clearest sound:

  • Hold the microphone 5–10 cm from the mouth.

  • Speak in a normal voice.

  • Do not cover the microphone openings with your hand.

  • Pass the microphone to the person who is speaking.

  • Encourage one person at a time to speak.

  • Use the table stand for longer answers or reading.

  • Keep the Roger Pass-around within approximately 20 metres of the classroom Roger system.

  • Return the microphone to its charging location at the end of the day.

10. Troubleshooting

The student cannot hear the person speaking

Check that:

  • The Roger Pass-around is switched on.

  • The Roger Touchscreen Mic is switched on.

  • The Pass-around has been connected to the Roger network.

  • The microphone is being held close enough to the speaker's mouth.

  • The microphone openings are not being covered.

  • The indicator light turns green when someone speaks.

  • The student is wearing their hearing devices and Roger receivers correctly.

  • The devices are within operating range.

The microphone will not switch on

The battery may be flat.

Place the microphone on charge and try again.

The microphone is on but there is no green light when speaking

Check that:

  • The microphone is not muted.

  • The Roger Touchscreen Mic is switched on.

  • The Pass-around is connected to the classroom network.

  • The microphone is within range of the primary Roger microphone.

Sound keeps dropping out

Move closer to the Roger Touchscreen Mic or other primary Roger transmitter.

Walls, distance and moving outside the Roger operating range may interrupt transmission.

11. At the End of the Day

  1. Switch off the Roger Pass-around.

  2. Check the microphone for damage.

  3. Place it in the Roger Charging Rack or connect its charger.

  4. Store it in a safe, dry location ready for the next school day.

Important

The Roger Pass-around should normally be configured by the school's hearing support professional, audiologist or appropriately trained staff member. Students and classroom teachers should generally only need to switch it on, use it and charge it.
